Borislava Daskalova, PhD on the lessons on multiculturality, learnt by Plovdiv, European Capital of Culture 2019.
OVERVIEW
The International citizen debate "European towns can take from the European Capitals of Culture - Lessons on Diversity Management and Inclusion" is a residential/blended debate within the INDIMAE Network. Some members of partner organisations who could not attend in person followed the streaming and joined the zoom meeting within the event online.
The European Capitals of Cultures are the flagship cultural initiative of the European Union. By the end of 2021 64 cities will have held the title of European Capital of Culture. INDIMAE Network involves ECOCs that have used the title as a catalyst for a step change in the city’s cultural and general development, producing sustainable cultural, social and economic impact. Participants in the debate discussed that the best way for a city to ensure legacy is to embed the European Capitals of Cultures year into its overall strategy, developing in particular links between culture, education, tourism, territorial planning, social services etc.
What could our Network learn from the lessons on inclusion that the European Capitals of Cultures can teach us? An ECOC is above all a forward-looking "cultural" project that is not only looking for cultural expression but also for intercultural dialogue; artistic tools for diversity management as well as creative cultural inclusive strategies that could be implemented long term in European towns. Therefore the European Capitals of Cultures have a lot to share when it comes to particular measures, strategies and programs, measuring their impact on the local communities and assessing their applicability in the long run.
Debated Topics
The meeting focused on the three main topic areas:
1. Debating the European Capitals of Cultures as forward-looking "cultural" projects for intercultural dialogue; artistic tools for diversity management and creative cultural inclusive strategies.
2. Discussion on the muliplicability of the good practices of the European Capitals of Culture within other European towns.
3. Learning from creative strategies on inclusion, applied by the European Capitals of Cultures and assessed as a success in the long term for the entire local community.
